Today the vast majority of rugs produced in wool today are hand tufted in China and India or hand knotted in Iran (Persia), Turkey, India, Afghanistan, China or Pakistan. Hand tufted rugs are produced using a hand gun that tufts the woollen yarn into the backing, once the design is compete it usually sheared and carved before a secondary backing is applied. Hand Knotted rugs are painstakingly woven on looms in the same traditional way they were woven a thousand years before.

One major advantage with wool is it’s acceptance to different dye stock, wool can be produced in virtually any colour you can imagine. New Zealand wool is generally accepted as being the best for softness and dyability.
