This collection of machine-made modern rugs are influenced by Beni Ourain hand woven Rugs produced by semi-nomadic Berber Tribes of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains. The seventeen Beni Ourain tribes raise sheep on the high ground and farm in the lowlands, their rugs are produced using high-quality wool and have a long open pile structure like shaggy rugs with distinctive tonal minimalist designs. While some tribes produce using vibrant colours the majority of the designs are tonal combinations of whitish creams, taupe browns and blackish greys made from undyed wool.

In contrast to the perfectly formed quatrefoils and patterns in warm bright colours we typically associate with Morocco, the Beni Ourain designs are characteristically unique, exhibiting simplistic shapes with charming irregularity. There are many simple diamond trellis style designs that can incorporate symbols based on the tribal tattoos and letters of the Berber alphabet. As it is usually women who do the weaving the design elements are dominant to more feminine aspects of life conveying symbols that represent fertility, birth and family. This minimalist random styling has captured the eye of twentieth-century designers who find the casual design concept fitting to contemporary and transitional décor.
